Social Responsibility - In the UK

The Christian Centre is passionate about touching the lives of those who are disadvantaged and marginalized in our community. To facilitate this work, we established an independent Christian-based charity called 58i.

The charity was inspired by the words of Isaiah 58, where God says true faith is to be found in loosening the chains of injustice, sharing food with the hungry and providing shelter for the homeless. 58i mobilizes scores of volunteers from our church, other churches and members of the local community to serve those in need in our city every day of the week.

Below is an outline of the work of 58i, all of which the Christian Centre helps to support and facilitate. You can also discover much more about 58i at www.58i.org, including how you can get involved and give to the work.

  • Aspire Mentoring is a project providing mentoring support to those dealing with substance misuse issues. It aims to help people access the holistic support they need including rehabilitation, healthcare and housing.
  • Working with the national charity txt3, 58i runs a CAP (Christians Against Poverty) centre which provides a free debt counseling service to families and individuals.
  • Company is the name of the parent and toddler groups meeting in two locations in the city – Beeston and St Ann’s. The groups provide an opportunity for parents to meet together for friendship and also to receive parenting and practical support.
  • Rally is a food service for the city’s homeless and vulnerably housed community. Run four evenings a week, the service provides hot food, a listening ear and an access point to our Aspire Mentoring project.
  • Saturday Serving provides a service to disadvantaged families and individuals through the providing of practical help with things like decorating and gardening.
  • Nottingham Nightstop provides emergency accommodation, in the homes of volunteer hosts, to young people who find themselves homeless.
  • Reach is a schools' based project providing pastoral care to pupils dealing with issues such as bereavement, bullying, family breakdown and depression.
  • The Christian Centre and 58i also partner in the work of the Jericho Road Project, a joint church initiative helping female street prostitutes make positive lifestyle changes and also Reach, a schools' based project providing pastoral care to pupils dealing with issues such as bereavement, bullying, family breakdown and depression.

The Christian Centre also runs a number of projects directly.

  • Operation Rudolph, a Christmas initiative providing hampers to marginalised families and individuals. Since its launch in 2002, almost £500,000 worth of stock has been distributed to those who most need it.
  • Prisons Ministry sees volunteers from the Christian Centre go into local prisons – getting alongside prisoners and also taking chaplaincy services.>
  • We run four charity shops around the city called Second Chance. Profit from the stores is given to 58i to help further its work.

If you would like to find out more about getting involved in any of these projects, please email us.
